The British Route
Once they reached the Chesapeake Bay, the British decided that they would split up into two groups and sail up two different rivers, the Potomac and the Patuxent.

The troops that went up the Patuxent stopped in Benedict, MD and marched northwest to Washington D.C. The troops that went up the Potomac sailed directly into the nation's capital.
